The TBC is to span from Sept 30-Oct 6 for out-of-towners, and Oct 16-Oct 30 for locals,  to February 19, 2012

Pre-registration required. Email here to receive your registration form. You will need to submit this in person along with $20. Registrants must fill out a form and pay a one-time $20 fee per couple, to be paid a minimum of one hour before 8:30pm on your competition night. If you don't make a prelim, you can re-enter on another night without re-paying.

There are 4 qualifying rounds in at Dovercourt House.Qualifying rounds are to be improvised to DJ selection bachata music for 1 minute and 15 seconds. 

 

Semis for Amateur Division: November 20, 2011 @Sunday Salsa Social, 8:30pm

Finals for both divisions: Sunday, February 19th, 2012 @ the Estonian House, 958  Broadview Ave, N of Danforth, during the Toronto Bachata Festival

Same Choreography can be used.

 

Prizes: $2000 cash for 1st place Pro; $500 for 1st place amateur. All finalists receive a full pass to the TBF.

This is a street bachata competition, featuring body rhythm, footwork and connection, rather than aerials, tricks and showmanship. The winners of both pro and am divisions in 2011, were the couples who followed these rules.

New for 2011/2012

OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVES OF THE TBC IN GATINEAU, QUEBECWe will be touring outside of Toronto promoting the TBC and TBF. We are hosting prelims in Gatineau (Sept 30) and Toronto at the Canada Salsa Congress Thursday Oct 6 for both Pro and Am divisions @Sheraton downtown.  Out-of-towners who make it to the finals will be posted for locals to see. 1st place winners will enter the semis. See below for dates.

 

 

 

 

 

Note that the TBC has the right to place a couple in either the pro or amateur divisions as they see fit.

Pro is defined as a dancer who either teaches at a full time Latin dance studio and gets paid. They may also perform with their dance school and also get paid.

Amateur is defined as a social dancer who dances for fun, as a hobby. They may have been in a student performance team before but never been paid to teach or perform in any dance.

Ask if you are unsure what your status is.

This competition is about showing as much street style as possible, and not turning it into a ballroom/salsa competition. Emphasis is placed on rhythm, movement, musicality, connection and partnering skills rather than acrobatics.

Pro winner receives $2000; Am winner receives $500, and trophies.

  2. Buy a Full Sunday Pass  ($125),  includes Sunday Workshops
  3. Buy a ticket for Sunday night only ($20).

Preliminaries for the Toronto Bachata Competition
are ALSO being held in Ottawa this year!

 

This is your chance to shine and live a wonderful dance experience!

 

**You do not have to prepare a routine for the preliminaries**

 

Two divisions:

·         Amateur division (both dancers have not received any money either by teaching or performing)  

·         Professional division (one or both dancer (s) have received money by teaching or performing)  

 

When:  

September 30, 2011 at 11 p.m.

 

Where:  

Rahim Latin Fridays (275 Elgin Street, St. John’s Parish Hall)

 

Registration Fee:

25$ to be paid to Stephanie Gurnon before performing (performers will not have to pay Rahim’s fee that night)

Competition Rules: 

All competitors will warm up together for 1.5 minutes. Then, all couples in each division will dance freestyle (which means no choreography, no lift, no costume allowed) to the DJ's selection, for 2 minutes altogether.  Selected couples will be invited to compete in the semi-finals in Toronto on November 20 for amateurs and November 27 for pros.

Judges: 

K-yo Victor (Zouk & Bachata instructor/ performer from Brazil) and Stephanie Gurnon (organizer of the Toronto Bachata Festival and founder of Go Dance Mambo) will be judging.

 

Prizes:

·         Winners in both divisions will receive a 2012 Toronto Bachata Festival (TBF) 2-day workshop pass.

·         All TBF semi-finalists from November 20 (amateur division) and November 27 (pro division) will receive a 2012 TBF full pass

·         1st place winners in the TBF finals for pro win $2000 and for amateur win $500.
